The saloon that split German motoring in two
In September 2001 BMW unveiled a 7 Series nobody had expected at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Under Chris Bangle, the marque abandoned the restraint of the E38 for a high-decked silhouette, taut volumes and surfaces worked in opposing tensions. The reaction was immediate and brutal. The press coined the term Bangle Butt, dealers cleared their stock of the previous generation, and the head of design became the most criticised man in the industry.
Twenty years on, the verdict has reversed. The E65 became the best-selling 7 Series in BMW history, with 343,073 cars built in seven years. Its line, judged provocative in 2001, now reads as the template for every prestige saloon that followed. What passed for a lapse of taste was a decade ahead of its time.
The March 2005 facelift, to which this car belongs, calms the design without disowning it. Slimmer headlights, a wider grille, a redrawn tail, the central light bar removed. The facelift keeps the audacity and gains the balance.
Three walk-arounds, unedited
One exterior tour, then two fixed shots of the front cabin and the rear seats. These sequences replace description: they show the condition of the surfaces, the leather and the panel gaps as it is, in natural light, untouched.

N73, the last naturally aspirated V12 in a 7 Series
The N73B60 is the first production V12 in the world to receive direct petrol injection. BMW paired it with Valvetronic, which varies intake valve lift continuously, and double VANOS, which controls camshaft timing. The whole is managed by five networked control units, including a dedicated engine management unit per cylinder bank.
This six-litre unit has direct descendants. Enlarged to 6,749 cc it became the N73B68 that powered the Rolls-Royce Phantom VII for thirteen years. The engine in this car is the technical cousin of the most prestigious twelve-cylinder of its era.
Its successor, the N74, went twin-turbo. The N73 therefore remains the last naturally aspirated V12 ever fitted to a 7 Series, and the culmination of a line opened in 1987 with the M70.
The era of the great naturally aspirated twelves is closed. Turbocharging, hybrid, electric: the smoothness and the silence of this engine now belong to the past. This engine will never be built again, and that is what makes this car increasingly sought after.
The rarest member of the range
The E65 7 Series came in short and long wheelbase. V12 buyers overwhelmingly chose the long version, driven by a chauffeur. The short-wheelbase 760i, meant for the owner who drives himself, stayed marginal in the volumes.
VIN range surveys carried out by collector registers put European production of the short-wheelbase facelift 760i at around four hundred units, against several thousand for the long-wheelbase 760Li. These figures are estimates derived from VIN decoding; BMW never published production statistics model by model.
Beyond a car, a piece of motoring history. Well-preserved naturally aspirated V12s are becoming scarce, and values for exceptional youngtimers are following that trend.

A bespoke order
BMW Individual is the marque's bespoke department. It allowed the customer to step outside the catalogue on paint, leather, wood and interior finishes. Special colours are applied in dedicated workshops and recorded under the generic code 490, Sonderlackierung, which covers every non-catalogue paint.
This car left the factory under that code, in a dark blue-black shade, with a leather interior and Piano Black lacquered wood trim. The exact commercial name of the paint appears on the manufacturer's plate and is being verified with BMW Classic, whose certificate will be handed to the buyer.
The factory order, read from the VIN
Every BMW keeps a record of its order. Decoding the VIN returns the list of equipment fitted on the line, code by code, exactly as the factory recorded it on 3 November 2005. Here is that list, reproduced without sorting or interpretation. You can check it yourself by entering the full number in any BMW decoder.
It reads plainly. Almost the entire 7 Series options catalogue is on this car, including the equipment reserved for the top of the range: Night Vision, Adaptive Drive, active seats, auxiliary heating, Comfort Access. And two codes tell you the first owner's intent: S940 for BMW Individual special equipment, S320 for deletion of the model badges. A car ordered not to announce itself.
A specification nobody builds any more. Heated, ventilated, active and memory front seats. Night Vision. Adaptive Drive active suspension. Adaptive bi-xenon headlights. HiFi Professional DSP audio, the system BMW sold as Logic 7. Glass sunroof. Keyless entry and start. Professional navigation. No modern saloon, even at the top of its range, still gathers this combination in the same philosophy of mechanical comfort throughout.

What the invoices say
This car left Dingolfing on 3 November 2005 and was first registered on 16 November. Delivered in Germany, with original German on-board documentation and software, it came to France later. Complete history from new, service book available, recent work carried out on the V12's known weak points, invoices to prove it.
The mileage is that of a long-distance tourer. On this engine, an odometer that climbs steadily with invoices behind it is worth more than a low reading obtained through long periods off the road, which damages seals, circuits and electronics more than regular use ever does.
Work carried out in the last twelve months
| Date | Odometer | Work |
|---|---|---|
| September 2025 | 184,743 km | Oil and filter change, 0W30 Top Tec oil, coolant top-up |
| November 2025 | 187,508 km | Front brake pads and wear sensor |
| January 2026 | 189,160 km | Bank 1 lambda sensors, sensors 1 and 2, diagnostic check and reset |
| January 2026 | 189,327 km | AGM battery 95 Ah 810 A, fitted |
| March 2026 | 189,160 km | Fuel pressure sensors, both replaced. Work carried out without an invoice, declared on the basis of the garage's original estimate |
| April 2026 | 191,983 km | Intake pressure sensors, manifold and intake profile gaskets, injector inlet O-rings, end flange, right and left coolant lines |
More than €3,100 spent over the last seven thousand kilometres. Invoices are in the owner's name, each quoting the VIN, and are handed to the buyer with the rest of the file.
The complete history, from the first kilometre
The history is complete from the first kilometre. Thirty-nine documented workshop visits between September 2006 and April 2026, taken from the stamped service book, from the BMW history report decoded from the VIN, and from the invoices. The odometer climbs without a break, from 9,135 km to 191,983 km. Six jobs were covered under manufacturer warranty, including the 2009 Valvetronic overhaul and both 2011 high-pressure pumps, which are precisely the items buyers fear on this engine.

The V12's known items, and what has already been done here
A V12 of this generation has a known set of items to watch. That is good news for a buyer: the list is short, published, and every item can be verified in a workshop. On this car they have all been dealt with, and for the most part between November 2025 and April 2026. Here is the record, item by item.
